The third millennium is set to present many educational opportunities for learners and challenges for teachers that go far beyond those experienced in previous decades. Home schooling is growing rapidly; so is distance education. Classrooms are taking on different looks, and individual learner variables are being taken into account far more often. Teaching methods change frequently, and the demands of outcomes-based instruction and the meeting of standards are new concepts in American education. Testing formats are hard-pressed to keep up with all these changes and varieties of education.
